Cummings and Hudson: Exhibition of New Work
Equinox - Spring by Bryce Hudson

Equinox – Spring by Bryce Hudson

The Leslie Curran Gallery @ ARTicles proudly presents the exhibition INTERSECTION: Bryce Hudson in conjunction with St Pete’s 2nd Saturday ArtWalk on Saturday, June 11th, 6-9pm. Hudson’s solo exhibition, inspired by modernism, minimalism, and pop art movements, features large-scale abstract geometric paintings full of bold color and pattern. See works on paper and canvas by the artist, accompanied by selected sculptural works from the artist’s remarkable collection of Post-War and Contemporary Art. These supplemental works provide insight into the artist’s inspiration and create an art historical framework for his paintings.

Bryce Hudson’s paintings are as notable for their nuance and sophistication as they are for their compositional drama. His work can be described as having a certain movement and three-dimensionality while retaining a reductive quality that is general to geometric abstraction. The hard-edged forms are bordered by bright bands of contrasting color producing multiple fields of form and color that play against one another.

Using a strict geometric language, limited palette, and sophisticated compositional format, Hudson achieves a remarkable diversity within a narrow framework. Architectural elements are Hudson’s muse – flipping and dissecting elements, transforming them into a dizzying array of colors and shapes. Surprisingly bright color bands add weight and movement to the paintings.

For example, central areas in the paintings, rather than appearing completely static, have a subtle yet rich variety of tones, weight, and illusion of depth or flatness, all achieved by employing directional brushwork and few variations in surface finish. Hudson’s edges are taut and sharp, and there is an inner tensile strength expressed in the forms. The emphatic diagonal movement in many of his works relates a feeling of containment within the picture frame, and a further implication of spatial depth. The scale of the works ranges widely, from medium-format works on paper to long eight-foot horizontals.

Hudson is also an avid art collector with an emphasis on 20th Century Geometric Abstraction, including objects in a wide variety of media. By dedicating himself to the research, collection and preservation of works from this period, he is embracing his place in art history, acknowledging his influences, and acting as a steward for these significant art objects. A thoughtful selection of these works will accompany the exhibition at Leslie Curran Gallery.

Bryce Hudson recently relocated his studio to Gulfport, Florida from Louisville, Kentucky. Hudson’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, China and Tanzania. He studied at The Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio, Kent State University in Kent, Ohio and Sullivan University in Louisville, Kentucky and is currently represented by Brian Marki Fine Art in Palm Springs, California and The Duane Reed Gallery in St Louis, Missouri.

INTERSECTION, Hudson’s premier solo exhibition in the Tampa Bay Area, opens on the evening of June 11th, 6-9 pm and continues through July 2nd, 2016.
