Holding Pattern The elegant visual simplicity of Hudson’s paintings petitioned for a contrast that to
him could only be brought about by photographic images of the human as a subject
in both form and concept. In the Holding Pattern series, Hudson’s subjects are young
women in their mid 20s to late 30s. Superimposed upon their faces are polychromatic
decorative patterns, the combination of which brings to the surface ideas of
symmetry, objects of decoration and femininity.
The ornate shapes present in the foreground of the works seem to dance around and
through the facial features of each subject, each pattern uniquely emphasizing and
enhancing the beautiful qualities of the underlying female form. In an unexpected
contrast, the overlaid patterns also become an artificial, man-made fence between
the viewer and the subject, just as preconception and prejudice can be a barrier to
knowing who someone truly is. The collection as a whole explores the striking visual
similarities and differences between all of the women and invites the viewer to ponder
the thoughts and feelings that linger just below the surface of each subject.
Hudson strives to illustrate the experience of being a young woman in modern society
and the associated pressures. Upon a closer look, the eyes of his subjects share
that story. The value society seems to place on the physical appeal of the woman is
brilliantly juxtaposed with her intellectual aptitude and emotional poise in this series.
With layers of graphic adornment added by the artist, we are reminded of the weight
of these societal and very personal expectations. Hudson is able to capture and
draw attention to this delicate balance that each woman seems to strike carefully yet
gracefully.
